Episode Summary

Episode 1

A view of Washington DC is shown as it zooms into the White House. Gennai stands on top as he begins to gather and shoot green electricity. The President and Secret service stand below in attempt to shoot him down. The green electricity flows from his hands and soon expands through the entire White House, denigrating it and causing it to burst into flames. He asks, "This isn't the library, huh?" Some one who was knocked over, answers, "It isn't!" Gennai is annoyed and walks away.

[Opening Theme Credits]

The faint ringing of a phone can be heard ringing from the depths of Yomiko's room, which is filled with books. The floor is nowhere to be seen. Underneath it all, there is rustling as Yomiko emerges from all the papers. She answers the phone and takes a job to substitute for a teacher. She then gets up, and gets ready for her favorite past time: collecting more books.

She hops from book store to book store, toting her little suitcase around, buying many books. After dropping off the books she bought, she comes to another book store. As she is about to reach for a book, called Immortal Love, another woman does as well. Yomiko wins the small argument over the book and she buys it.

Once outside, as Yomiko pages through the book, suddenly, a truck over turns and wasps swarm out. There is chaos and explosions in the city. Yomiko shields herself, using her magic powers, making a shield out of paper. Then Fabre, a man with antennae and green skin, riding a giant grasshopper, appears. It tries to take Yomiko's book, but drags Yomiko with the book, as Yomiko will not let go. But Yomiko is tossed to the ground, and the book is in Fabre's possession. Fabre tries to fly away on the grasshopper, but Yomiko ties him down with a strand of red paper. Climbing over cars and trucks, Yomiko diligently, retrieves her book and sends the grasshopper and Fabre flying into a building.

Joker shows up for the seen because of all the commotion. He locates Yomiko and is surprised to find her, as she is surprised to see him too. He says "It's a world crisis" and he will explain the rest later. He takes the book out of Yomiko's hands and Yomiko follows him. From the distance, the woman from the book shop watches Yomiko. Fabre's body is seen drooping from the building, but it is empty and only the clothes that she was wearing remains.

Joker and Yomiko then go to the base. They talk to Gentleman and explain the situation. Joker explains, "Two days ago, in Washington DC, a mysterious man appeared. He caused many injuries. Finally, he attacked America's Library of Congress, stole 600 kikou books from there, and disappeared." Yomiko is stunned about the kikou books. "Congress issued a formal request for the man and the books." Joker then explains about the suspect, Gennai Hiraga and about the grasshopper and grasshopper man, Fabre. Joker asks Gentleman for the approval of the plan to retrieve the books. Gentleman says, "It sounds good..." Yomiko asks if she can be in the plan too, and Joker says, "Of course." She then remembers about her third class teaching job, but Joker says, "Which is more important, world peace or a job?" But Yomiko replies, "But, but! When there is world peace, if I don't have a job, I wont's be in peace." Joker says, "Don't worry, we will pay you", but Yomiko says it's not enough because of all the books she has bought. Joker sighs as Gentleman laughs and says they will give her the Second Volume of the book. Yomiko is very excited. Yomiko asks for the First Volume back, but Joker tells her that she has to do analysis and research first.

Joker then tells Gentleman that they need for Yomiko to have a partner for the mission. Joker calls Drake Anderson, who was making pottery.

Later, it is time for the mission. Yomiko is sitting in the helicopter, waiting for Drake. When he arrives, he is not very happy, because it's obvious he's not very excited about being called for a mission. He says, "Listen carefully! I bought a fortune paper this morning and it said, 'Excellent Luck.' 'Big Lucky.' However, not even half a day passed before I got a call from that stupid Joker. And he said I'm your support! If this is 'excellent luck,' what bad luck would I get if I got 'terrible luck'?" Yomiko ignores him and continues to smile and read her book. Drake also knows the trick that if you want Yomiko to listen, you have to take her book. He does and she frantically searches for the book and notices that Drake is there.

Next, they go to the burnt up Library of Congress, in Washington DC. Yomiko is very sad because the books were damaged. An investigator calls the attention of Drake and Yomiko and tells them that the damage done to the library was not by normal means. Yomiko then asks Drake what she should do, and he replies sarcastically and rolls his eyes, "Just daydream at the edge of the room and make sure you don't get in our way." Drake then turns back to the investigator who says the room was like a microwave.

Yomiko of course takes Drakes sarcasm literally, she is very gullible, and searches for the edge. She sits down a little sad but then jumps up again when she notices the bookcase behind her contains Arinim's "Versammlung." Then she sees Eupro Eldomakie's "Poliling." She is instantly lifted in sprits and sort of dances around the books as if in a dream.

She reaches for a book, and again the woman before is there to reach for a book too. She introduces herself as Miss Deep and says that she was surprised to first meet Yomiko in Tokyo before. Miss Deep is slightly annoyed and says she can't believe that Yomiko is the famous The Paper. Yomiko smiles and introduces herself, but Miss Deep doesn't shake Yomiko's hand. Yomiko feels a little awkward, but then smiles and asks for Miss Deeps real name. Miss Deep said it is stupid to give out real names and says that the code names will be more sufficient. Yomiko says that if they know real names they will get along better, but Miss Deep shrugs her off. But then Miss Deep smiles and holds out her hand for Yomiko to shake. Yomiko's hand goes right through Miss Deep's hand and Yomiko is shocked. Then Miss Deep disappears through the floor and reappears in her mission outfit. She pinches Yomiko's cheek and says, "This is my power. I can go into objects and through them." Miss Deep says that Yomiko is too unprepared, but Yomiko quickly whips out a paper.

Suddenly, much noise is heard and papers fly everywhere. Otto Lilienthal flies on a bird-like vehicle and shouts that he will be taking the book. Yomiko is flung to the side as Otto takes the book, but Miss Deep begins to fire at Otto. Otto then disappears.

Back at the Library of Congress, Drake is still looking at the mess. He says, "What an unlucky day." Yomiko runs in and shouts to Drake that the book was taken. She is in a panic and shouts that she will chase it. Miss Deep says that it is confirmed that Otto is an I-jin. Drake is surprised and asks who Miss Deep is. Yomiko says that Miss Deep is her partner. Drake looks at Miss Deep (her mission outfit is very showy, to say the least, a typical anime costume...). He says, "My lucky day..." Miss Deep says, "Huh?"

Yomiko, Drake, and Miss Deep then leave in the helicopter.

Joker is pouring over mounds of papers on his desk. He is doing a background check on Miss Deep. Wendy walks in and brings more papers, but trips and scatters them all over the floor. Wendy picks herself up and then an announcement on the TV over Joker's head says that an I-jin, Otto Lilienthal, appeared. Gentleman then explains some background of Otto to Joker, through the TV. Joker is tracking Otto, and sees that he is traveling to New York at a very fast speed.

Otto is over New York and is being followed by many helicopters containing the US military. They try to shoot Otto down, but he is too fast. The helicopters loose control. Then the helicopter with Yomiko, Drake, and Miss Deep arrives in New York. Miss Deep is very serious but Yomiko is only thinking about her book.

On the bridge, Gennai is there and begins to send electricity into the air and through New York, and collects all the power which causes all the power to go out. He then uses all the electricity and throws it at the helicopters in the air. They explode and fall into the water. The helicopter containing Yomiko, Drake, and Miss Deep loses control because of the electricity. They jump out on top of a building and the helicopter falls and explodes. The power returns to the city. Yomiko stands up and opens her suitcase. All of her paper flies out, which she uses to make a giant paper air plane. Drake is stunned and says, "Is she for real?" Miss Deep says, "It's crazy." Yomiko climbs inside and Miss Deep follows. Drake lifts the paper air plane and sets it off into the air. Yomiko is very determined. They are thrown into the air but begin to fall. Yomiko then remembers that she forgot the make the tail so she climbs to the end of the plane and quickly makes it. They fly over New York and catch up to Otto. Miss Deep fires and Yomiko guides the plane. Yomiko then demands her book back. Otto tries to make the plane explode, but Yomiko throws the explosives away. Otto chases them and they are in front of the Statue of Liberty. Miss Deep jumps out and phases through the statue. Otto is still trying to make Yomiko fall, but she flings papers at him. He then flings more explosives but Yomiko turns the plane into a paper ball and then into a paper rope-like thing. She is clinging to Otto's vehicle and demands the book again. Otto fires a gun at Yomiko, but she stops the bullet with a piece of paper. Soon he runs out of bullets, all of which Yomiko blocked. Yomiko demands the book again, and this time Otto acts like he will give it to her, but he spins the vehicle and Yomiko falls to the end. Otto continues flying and then they re-circle the Statue of Liberty, where Miss Deep is waiting at the top. She says, "Your sky ends here!" and attaches a rope to Otto's vehicle. It brings to spin wildly, sending the book into the air. Of course, Yomiko jumps after it. She catches it and then falls, but her trench coat is snagged by part of the statue. Otto's vehicle circles and then crashes into the torch of the statue, causing an explosion.

Yomiko clutches the book lovingly and smiles. Miss Deep arrives and says, "You're pretty stupid, aren't you? Don't you think beforehand? Which is more important, your life or the book?" Yomiko looks a little ashamed, but Miss Deep smiles. "But you aren't completely useless." She helps Yomiko up and Yomiko says, "Thank you very much, Miss Deep..." and Miss Deep interrupts, "It's Nancy...Nancy Makuhari." Yomiko says, "But..." and Nancy says, "It's alright. The truth is, I don't like that codename. It isn't cute." Yomiko says, "I'm Yomiko, Yomiko Readman." and Nancy replies, "You already told me..."

Behind the statue, Gennai and a younger Fabre sit on a purple bug-like vehicle. Gennai says, "A fool until death, huh?"
