In 1999, Avex hosted a huge contest for young girls around Japan, called "Avex Dream 2000." Out of the 12,000 participates, only the three most talented and lucky were chosen to be part of a new J-pop group called "DREAM." These girls were Mai Mastsumuro from Oita, Yu Hasebe from Gifu, and Kana Tachibana from Osaka. DREAM was formed after the previous group SPEED had broken up. DREAM quickly became one of the popular j-pop groups along with "Morning Masume," "Earth," "Folder 5","Color," "Whiteberry," and more. As the DREAM members were chosen for their talent and exceptional voices, it was obvious when Mai Matsumuro even wrote some of the songs, such as 'Reality.' Unlike SPEED, where there were two main singers and two backup singers, the members of DREAM each had main parts in the songs.

The group debuted on January 1, 2000, with the single Movin' on, which made it into the Oricon top 15 with a mature image and non-cheesy eurobeats. Their next few singles all charted in similar territory, failing to break the top 10 until their sixth single, My Will, made it to #6 at the end of 2000. Ironically, the group's next single would be their worst-charting to date, peaking at #36.

During DREAM's career, the group produced 13 singles (Movin'on, Heart on Wave / Breakin' out, Private wars, reality, NIGHT OF FIRE, My will, Believe in you, solve, Our Time, STAY, Get Over, Yourself, SINCERELY-ever dream) and 4 ablums (EURO"dream"land, Dear..., Process, and eternal dream).

DREAM was considered a "typical" j-pop group. They didn't offer many new ideas but they did show the solid Euro dance style of j-pop, which helped to maintain typical j-pop.

Eventually, Mai Mastsumuro resigned from the group to persue lyric writing. On July 8, 2002, at 10 am, DREAM became an eight member group, consisting of Risa Ai, Erie Abe, Aya Takamoto, Ami Nakashima,Sizuka Nishida, Kana Tachibana, Yu Hasebe and Sayaka Yamamoto. All of the new members averaged around the age 14, unlike the original DREAM who were in their late teens.

Things were considered more or less over for the group when Mai, who wrote most of their lyrics, decided to leave in 2002. avex held more auditions for a replacement, but ended up with 6 new girls, which many saw as an attempt to emulate the success of top girl-group Morning Musume. The new 8-girl group "re-debuted" in 2003 with MUSIC IS MY THING. Roughly one year later, Ai Risa would leave to pursue a solo career, bringing the group's member count down to 7.

As a 7-member group, dream primarily released cover albums (covering songs by 3-member dream, and other avex artists), until the mini-album was settled on their standard medium for releasing new material. This latter trend would continue through June 2007, when the group again "re-debuted" -- this time as DRM, with a mini-album of the same name. On June 27th, 2007, dream was "reborn" as the dance/chorus group DRM in an attempt to shed their image as idols.

Since 2005, the girls' activities have seemed to involve as much sports as music. Their former group name is the namesake of TEAM dream, a futsal team often in competition with Gatas Brilhantes H.P., and DRM's full roster helps populate the team's ranks, with key members playing prominent positions.
